Hugh Carthy's Bio
Hugh Carthy has made his own way to the WorldTour. During an era in which most British riders develop within the British Cycling bubble, Hugh opted for another path. The 23-year-old moved to Pamplona, Spain to race for the Spanish Professional Continental squad Caja Rural – Seguros RGA during the 2015-2016 seasons.
With Caja Rural, Hugh mastered Spanish fluency and climbing alongside the sport’s best. During his sophomore season with the Spanish squad, he finished ninth overall and best young rider at Volta a Catalunya, ninth overall at Vuelta a Madrid, and won a stage and the overall at Vuelta Asturias. Hugh’s strength on the steepest roads coupled with his humble, tenacious and single-minded approach to racing earned him a spot on this team in 2017.
In his first season in argyle, Hugh earned the nickname “Huge” and showcased his signature tongue wag in some of the sport’s toughest finales. Team founder Jonathan Vaughters believes Hugh has the potential to be one of the best three-week racers in the world and is thrilled to have a hand in his early development.
