“Exploring the world and seeing the beauty from the bike is important to this team. It’s important to me, too, to be happy on the bike.”

Meet Sergio. A mid-race transfer to the WorldTour with EF Education–NIPPO in 2019, Sergio was christened the “Higuita Monster” by team boss Jonathan Vaughters because his fresh face belies his killer instincts out on the road. Those instincts netted Sergio impressive results during his first six months racing the world’s biggest races, including winning a stage during his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España. In 2020, Sergio won the Colombian National Championship on the road before taking the Tour of Colombia general classification. A natural climber, Sergio dances downhill, packs a punch in the sprint and is a crafty bike handler, making him one of the most versatile riders in the bunch.

Sergio found cycling at a school. A teacher signed him up to participate in a local bike race when he was five-years-old. It was love at first pedal stroke. Although he never did win the annual race, he came to consider the event the highlight of his primary school years.

Sergio’s must have travel items include a photo album that his girlfriend made him six years ago, that includes motivational phrases along with pictures, a birthday gift from him mom, and a cross.
