Return to the Girona Roads

After the restrictions in Spain were lifted, riders carefully headed for the open roads

After spending two months under tight lockdown restrictions, our Girona-based riders – Jimmy WhelanJimmy Whelan, Mike WoodsMike Woods, and Mitch DockerMitch Docker – got to ride outside again. Like many of us, they’ve been trying to make the most out of time spent at home, finding new ways to stay fit, active, and entertained while staying connected to the people they care about.

While things aren’t back to normal yet, we are seeing glimpses of normalcy. Riding outside was one of those glimpses. It’s amazing to be back outside again, riding our bikes and exploring some home roads.

Take a look back at Jimmy, Mike, and Mitch’s first ride back outside shot by photographer Jojo Harper.

“First thing I wanted to do once I could get out was to hit the gravel and explore. It felt awesome.”

– Mitch Docker

“It was quite an emotional experience to be back outside again. I was quite overwhelmed to be rolling through the small lanes of Girona and to feel the warmth of the sun. It was the first time I’ve experienced happy tears.”

– Jimmy Whelan

“On my first ride out, as ridiculous as it sounds, at one point on the ride, I literally shouted out, “YES!” I didn’t take riding for granted before this, but man I missed riding, and it felt so good to be doing again what I do best in this world.”

– Mike Woods

“The greatest memory was seeing people smile and welcome one another in the streets — everyone was so happy.”

– Jimmy Whelan

“It was awesome to be riding out in the fresh air again. I was feeling amazing and being able to go fast after being constrained to the indoor trainer felt incredible. Training indoors has made me stronger and all I wanted to do was to tear the road up and feel speed again.”

– Mitch Docker

“I broke my femur four days before the lockdown in Spain began, and the first day that the doctors allowed me to ride outside, was the first day professional riders were allowed to ride outside.  The timing was incredible.”

– Mike Woods

“The lockdown really allowed some time to slow down, completely transform my gratitude for what I do, the people around me, good health and the simple pleasure of going outside.”

– Mike Woods
