Our squad for the 2026 Giro d’Italia

EF Education-EasyPost shoots for stage wins

May 6, 2026

Get ready for lift off!

EF Education-EasyPost touched down in Bulgaria, where James Shaw, Alexander Cepeda, Darren Rafferty, Michael Valgren, Markel Beloki, Samuele Battistella, Madis Mihkels, and Jardi van der Lee donned their ASSOS Close Encounter kit for the first time and swooped along the Black Sea coast to get ready for the Grande Partenza of the 2026 Giro d’Italia. Their mission for the next three weeks is to win stages. They will come into contact with awesome terrain on the way, as they rocket across Bulgaria and back into the Giro d’Italia’s home orbit, where the Appennines, Dolomites, and Alps await. Our final destination is Rome, one of the great centers of human civilization. Millions of people will line the Giro’s trajectory to cheer our racers on, as they ascend mountains like the Borovets Pass, Blockhaus, and Passo Giau at warp speed. The longest grand-tour time trial in decades will cause an acceleration. So will the final kilometers of each and every stage. James, Alexander, Darren, Michael, Markel, Samuele, Madis, and Jardi are each dreaming of racing into the firmament of Giro d’Italia stage winners. The 2026 edition starts Friday and EF Education-EasyPost is shooting for the stars.

Michael Valgren

We’re back. It’s the second Giro d’Italia for me. I have some good memories from my first one. We have a opportunistic team here, so it should be a great three weeks. I’m going to go all in to try to win a stage. I’m really well prepared. I am better than two years ago, and I think I can win one. At Tirreno, I finally won again and the feeling is just so sweet. I want to feel that again. That is basically my motivation, to have that feeling again. I want a grand tour stage win on my resumé. I’m not saying that is what I need or miss, because I am missing a lot, but I think I deserve it, so I want to go and try and grab one.

Markel Beloki

I'm feeling good, really excited to see how it goes with the Giro. I already did a grand tour last year, but everyone tells me that the Giro is completely different.
I am really looking forward to seeing how it goes. We don't have a leader for GC, so we will try different things. We’ll sprint for Madis and then we will try to win from breakaways. Each rider is going to try on the day he feels good. For me, a good breakaway in a hard stage would be perfect. When I have the legs, I will try for it.

James Shaw

I feel good, fresher than last year, when I went in a bit fatigued. So, to be here in Bulgaria is pretty sweet. We want to win as many stages as possible. Madis can win from a sprint, and then the rest of us are going to try to win from breakways.
Trying to win a grand tour stage is the thing that’s been hacking around in the back of my head for my whole career. It would validate all the work that I’ve done in the sport.

Darren Rafferty

I feel a lot more relaxed going into this Giro than last year. I think the second one feels just as nice, but without a lot of the stress and unknowns. So far, so good.

It is weird not having Richie this year. The last two grand tours that I've been a part of have both been for GC. This year, I should hopefully have my own chances during the three weeks. I’ll grab the opportunity with both hands and see what I can get out of it. We’re each going to get our own chances. I think that will work out well in the end.
