Noemi Rüegg wins Vuelta Femenina opening stage
Our Swiss champion takes the first red jersey after a wet, hectic opener in Galicia
May 3, 2026
Noemi Rüegg stepped up to the podium and pulled on the Vuelta’s famous red leader jersey after she won the opening stage.
After 113.9 kilometers of racing from Marín to Salvaterra de Miño, on a day of rain, slick descents, nervous corners, and a late crash that split the bunch, Noemi launched with 175 meters to go and never looked back. The rest of the peloton chased but Noemi was gone.
“Absolutely insane, honestly, I can't really believe it,” a delighted Noemi said at the finish.
“It’s just a dream, you know, to win a grand tour stage. The team believed in me so much, and it was a big goal to go for the win, but the girls believed in it more than I did, and it's insane to finish it off like this. I don't know what to say.”
The squad raced the day to perfection. From the start, our riders stayed switched on. Kristen Faulkner was active on the climbs, taking points on both categorized ascents, while the team kept Noemi protected through the nervous middle section of the stage. With rain falling again inside the final 30 kilometers, positioning became everything. EF Education-Oatly stayed at the front, calm and alert when the race tightened.
'It was quite hectic from the beginning because it was raining at the start, and it made it quite hectic, and the descents were very slippy. We stuck to the plan, we focused on the final and finished it off amazing,” Noemi said.
Before the race began, Noemi and the squad had their sights set on the opening stage.
'I knew this finish was perfect for me. If I was to draw my dream stage, it would end exactly like this, so I knew I could trust on a long sprint. I knew from the last corner I wanted to go full gas and all in, and the team put me in a great position, and then I just went all out from the last corner. I didn't want to have any regrets, and I had a gap pretty immediately. I just kept going, and I looked back and saw I could make it to the finish. It was a dream.”
With six stages remaining in La Vuelta Femenina, today’s win only heightens our squad’s spirits.
“It gives a lot of confidence to everyone, and I really want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my teammates,” Noemi said. “They really believed in me and they encouraged me, and we had the race under control from the beginning. We owned the race and we were always together, and this gives me a lot of confidence. I think that's what we take into the next few days as well, that we can trust each other, and it's so nice that we got such a reward today, with the victory.”
Noemi also takes the lead in the points classification.
One day down. But what a day it was. Congrats, squad!
