Mattia Agostinacchio ends his cyclocross season to recover from illness

European U23 cyclocross champion will recover at home before resuming preparations for his pro road debut

January 23, 2026

Mattia Agostinacchio will miss the rest of the cyclocross season to recover from a viral infection and prepare for his first professional road season.

The 18-year-old Italian stormed into his first year with EF Pro Cycling with a victory at the European U23 championships and impressive performances against the pros at races such as the World Cup in Namur.

However, in recent weeks, Mattia developed a viral infection, which caused fatigue and prevented him from competing at his best. Together with EF Pro Cycling’s medical team, he has decided to end his cyclocross season. Mattia will resume training once he has returned to full strength.

“I am disappointed to miss the last races of the season, but it is what it is,” Mattia said. “We decided to stop my season to recover. It’s for the best. I’m proud of my season. I had some ups and downs, but overall, I think we can say it went pretty well with Euros and Namur. The last weeks were frustrating, because I just couldn’t push the power on the pedals.”

Mattia will now take some time to rest and recover at home in Aosta. He is eager to make his pro road debut with EF Education-EasyPost once he has returned to full health.

“It is going to be pretty special,” Mattia said. “I don’t know what to expect from myself and I don’t know what to expect from the other riders in the peloton. I’m just going to listen to my coaches, do my training, stay relaxed and take my time.”

Rest up, Mattia. You’ll be back on the road soon. We’re excited to see you race in EF Education-EasyPost pink.
