Graduation Day: Gavin Sherry steps up with EF Education-EasyPost

'I’ve been having a blast with EF Education-Aevolo, and I can’t wait to move onto the next step with EF Education-EasyPost,' American phenom says

After an impressive introduction to European racing with USA Cycling and EF Education-Aevolo, 22-year-old American Gavin Sherry will join EF Education-EasyPost’s WorldTour squad in 2027, having signed a contract through 2028.

Hailing from West Hartford, Connecticut, Gavin has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year, progressing from local amateur racing to the WorldTour while completing a computer science degree at Stanford University.

He joined EF Education-Aevolo in July after a breakthrough spring in Europe, finishing 11th overall at the Peace Race before taking an outstanding second-place general classification finish at the Oberösterreich Rundfahrt in Austria.

After racing in EF Education-Aevolo colors through the remainder of the season, including at the Tour de l’Avenir, and the U23 road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Canada for Team USA, Gavin is now settling into life in Girona, Spain. He's focusing on the off-season before joining his new WorldTour teammates ahead of the 2027 campaign.

“I’m just super excited. Joining this team is an unbelievable opportunity, and to think that just eight months ago I was a cat three racer, trying to work my way through the system. I’m incredibly excited, and the last couple of months have been hectic, but they've opened my eyes to the world of pro cycling and what I need to work on. I feel like every race that I’ve done in the last six months has been harder than the last. They’ve been more technical, the level has been higher, but it’s been really fun. I’ve been having a blast with EF Education-Aevolo, and I can’t wait to move onto the next step with EF Education-EasyPost,” Gavin said.

Following a running injury in 2025, Gavin took up cycling to speed up his recovery, and soon he was racing domestically. He rapidly rose through the ranks in the months that followed, and in the spring of this year USA Cycling reached out about his first forays into European racing. It’s been a whirlwind year for the young rider, and he’s looking forward to making the next step with EF Education-EasyPost.

“At the start of the year, I had no idea I’d have progressed so quickly. I really thought that if turning pro was on the cards, it would be something further down the line by a couple of years, but I had my lucky breakthrough thanks to USA Cycling, and from there things really took off,” he said.

“There are lots of reasons why I decided to join EF Education-EasyPost. I hesitate to call it an American team because it's truly international, but with Jonathan Vaughters as the lead and many American riders, it felt like an easier team to transition into than others. Everyone I spoke to was excited and dialled in on my case. I think I’ll develop really well here, and I’ve been extremely happy with my choice so far,” he says.

Gavin is enthusiastic and eager to learn, but he also recognizes the challenge ahead. Even the transition from racing in the US to joining the EF Education-Aevolo setup took time to adjust to, but he’s also using his off-season to work on areas he and the team have identified.

“The races that the USA Cycling team took me to were very much suited to me and a bit more polite racing, if we can call it that. The first race I did with EF Education-Aevolo was Kreiz Breizh Elites, and positioning was incredibly difficult. That was really hard. Tour de l'Avenir was super hectic, with the most crashes I’ve ever seen, and it was hard to get used to that, especially in the crosswinds. That showed me how much I need to work on positioning. It showed what level I need to achieve on that front, and I’ve got full faith that I’ll be able to do that,” he said.

Despite the steep learning curve, Gavin has enjoyed the adventure.

“It’s fun. EF Pro Cycling have been so supportive. Mike Creed, the DS for the development team, has been walking me through so many things, and right now I’m working on my descending with Jeremy Hunt, who works with the team. I’ve received so much support from everyone in the organization, and it’s been incredible. It feels like I’m on a fast track to the WorldTour,” he said.

Congratulations on joining the WorldTour team, Gavin. We can’t wait to see where this adventure takes you!
