Far Beyond: Three Peaks Cyclocross Gear Check
Lachlan Morton will race his Cannondale LAB71 SuperX in Yorkshire
September 25, 2025
Lachlan Morton is in Yorkshire, ready to take on the famous Three Peaks Cyclocross.
On Sunday, he will race over Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, pedalling, hiking, and scrambling over the fells with a few hundred riders who are as convinced as he is that a cyclocross bike can handle the toughest terrain in the Pennnines.
With his Cannondale LAB71 SuperX under him, Lachlan is prepared for Yorkshire’s roughest stuff.
Lachlan packed all of his gear into his Gregory Alpaca 100 duffel. He brought several sets of Rapha kit, with wet- and cold-weather clothes in case the days get grim or it starts chucking it down. He is racing with his trusty POC Cytal Lite helmet and has put spikes on his shoes to help run up the fells. He always rides with his Knog Blinder tail light for visibility.
The LAB71 SuperX is Cannondale’s ultimate carbon off-road race bike. Super light for the uphills, nimble for the descents, and aero for the road sections, it is the best bike for the job.
Lachlan has made some modifications to tailor his machine for Three Peaks. He was tinkering with his set up until the day before the race.
“I’m riding really small gearing, because it’s very steep,” he said. “The organizers don’t allow tires wider than 35 mm and it’s going to be muddy, so I’ll run the 33 mm Vittoria Dugast Typhoons. I’ve got the levers a little more rolled up so I can hang on when I’m bouncing down the hills, and I’ve got a couple more spacers. Those are the main mods.”
Lachlan’s brand new Vision SC 48 I25 wheels are more than robust enough to handle all the jolts from the ground. Handbuilt with Vision’s advanced carbon fiber technology, they feature a 25-mm internal hooked rim optimized for wider tires. With a 48mm profile and 24 aero-bladed spokes, they will slice through the wind on the faster road sections. And they weigh just 1594 grams, which Lachlan is sure going to appreciate when he has to shoulder his bike to run up the fells.
With Vittoria’s legendary Dugast Typhoons, he’ll be able to trust his grip in the corners downhill. Proven on the toughest World Cup cyclocross circuits, their specially designed tread is built to carve turns in loose, muddy conditions. Their 240 TPI cotton provides supple ground feel and a neoprene coating adds waterproofing and protection against mud and grit.
Lachlan’s mechanic wrapped his Cannondale System R-One Carbon one-piece cockpit with Fizik Solocush bar tape to add cushioning for his hands, so he can steer, shift, and brake well into the third brutal hour of the race. Lachlan rides a Fizik Aliante R3 Adaptive saddle on his LAB71 SuperX.
The Three Peaks Cyclocross route is marked by 14 checkpoints, which take riders over the summits of the Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough fells. To stay on route and make sure he hits every spot, Lachlan will navigate the course with his Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT 3. Wahoo’s latest BOLT features a bigger, crisper display to ease navigation in all conditions, so Lachy will be able to see where he is going at a glance, even when he is chattering down a moor and his screen is splattered with Yorkshire mud.
