Esra Tromp looks back at the Tour de France Femmes and ahead to the future
EF Education-Oatly general manager is excited about squad’s performance
August 20, 2025
EF Education-Oatly general manager Esra Tromp loved what she saw at the Tour de France Femmes.
From the Grand Départ in Brittany to the final stage in the Alps, the whole squad rallied around Cédrine Kerbaol to lift her as high as they could up the GC standings. Unfazed by setbacks or pressure from the media and thousands and thousands of French fans who wanted to see Cédrine succeed, they went above and beyond for their captain – and were then willing to risk it all on the final day, when Cédrine said, let’s not be satisfied with fifth; let’s throw all our chips on the table, come what may.
What came was a crash. Even then the team wasn’t disheartened and raced with all their strength to the finish line.
We caught up with Esra after the Tour de France Femmes to get her take on the race and look ahead to the rest of the season.
Esra, how would you sum up our Tour de France Femmes?
It was a journey for the whole team, preparing to go into the Tour de France with the goal to go for a GC result with Cédrine. That was already a nice process. And then the race itself, we rode well the first few days. They were real classics parcours with fast finishes and we did lose a bit of time. Then it was about keeping calm and relaxed and keeping focused on the end goal. We knew that in the beginning it would be about seconds and the last few days would be about minutes. We stuck to our process and our goal, just as we did in training. I'm really proud of the whole team for how they stuck to the plan and committed completely to what we said that we wanted to do. On the really tough day over the Madeleine, we realized the goal we’d set out to get: reaching the top five of GC. It was sad that that dream crashed on the last day, but that's part of cycling. In the end, I'm really proud that we stuck to our goal and that we did everything really well during the race and in the preparation for it.
What did we learn from the Tour?
Of course, we need to review the whole race and the process to see where the gap to the best is. Where did we miss something? How can we be better for this race next season? But, overall, I'm really proud and happy with where we ended up and how the team raced. A good lesson is that we can trust the team, we can trust the riders and the whole performance staff to find realistic but challenging goals and go into a race like this with really high ambitions. That's the biggest lesson from the Tour de France. The level is extremely high. We had a rider who was under a lot of pressure from the media, especially as a French rider going for the GC. I think we can trust ourselves to create a really good atmosphere and performance environment for the women on the team. We are not always the underdogs. I am super happy with this Tour de France, and I see a lot of potential for the future.
What made the team stick together?
The vibe in the team, the commitment that they have, but also the positive vibes from the sports directors and everybody on the ground who kept believing that this goal was realistic and that we could do it together if we stuck to the plan. Crashes and mechanicals are part of cycling, something you want to limit of course, but part of the sport. The lows and the highs make it beautiful.
How do you think Cédrine handled being a leader?
That was for us a little bit of a question mark, how that would turn out. We haven’t know her in the team for super long yet. We did a preparation race and trial at the Vuelta with her and we really saw a shift in her personality. That gave us the confidence boost we needed to say, “Let’s go for GC at the Tour.” We saw that she could handle it, that she really is a leader. For us, that was really nice to see. The first few days were near her hometown and the area where she grew up. That put her under a lot of pressure, but she handled it really well. I'm proud of how she did that and how she encouraged the whole team to keep on trying. Going into the last stage, she was fifth, but wanted to go for even more. That’s extremely cool. It is what you want to see from a leader, how she encourages all the riders, but also the staff. That gives me a good confidence boost for the future with her too.
The other riders really stepped up as well
Because we had such a clear goal and the roles for every stage for the whole race were super clear, everybody was super committed.
Mags was outstanding. I don’t know what more a leader could would wish for. She did an amazing job and proved herself. Henri did a really awesome job too. All of the riders did. They had no problem sacrificing their own opportunities for the team goal. That actually probably gave them a boost in their performance. With such a clear goal to go for GC, they went above and beyond. I think that was also because Cédrine gave positive feedback and vibes to the riders. In general, the whole race was super positive and good. The riders encouraged themselves to keep trying for more. That is the vibe that you want to have in the team for sure.
How were the crowds?
Amazing. It is what you want to see it at every single race, but that will hopefully come with time. The public was so enthusiastic and there were so many people watching. It was really cool to see a massive increase in TV viewing numbers as well. Not only is the level of support for the riders and how many people are watching growing, the level in the race itself is higher and higher as well. The women's sport is growing and that is a really cool thing to see.
There is still lots of bike racing left this year. What can we expect from the squad?
We have some nice races on the calendar with a few WorldTour races like Romandie and the Simac Tour in the Netherlands, but also some Italian races and the world championships, where a lot of our riders will be competing. We have a few goals in these races with some of the younger riders, but mostly we want to stick to our DNA and build on the foundation that we set in the last year and a half and really show the jersey of our team and show our courage and build from that to next season. We are also really excited to race in the US. There are basically no pro races anymore in the States and that is super sad, so we are happy that we can come over to the Maryland Cycling Classic on September 6 and show our team and show the world that there should be more racing in the US. So, we do have some goals, but mostly it is about showing ourselves and going for wins and have that winning mentality.
