Thursday’s Vuelta stage 18 appeared to be the most relaxed day of racing we’ve seen yet. For those in the peloton, wasn’t quite it as cruisey as the television broadcast may have suggested.
“Today we had to be focused and ready all day long because there’s a high risk of crosswind in the area,” said sport director Juanma Garate. “In the end, nothing happened and we set up the sprint with Tom Van Asbroeck. The sprint teams played too much with the breakaway and lost to the break — so there was a nice surprise at the end.”
Van Asbroeck sprinted in for sixth place in the bunch, good for eighth place on the stage, with Jelle Wallays (Lotto-Soudal) taking the surprise victory.
