There wasn’t dry eye in the proverbial house when Mike Woods won at the Vuelta. The Canadian’s big result was three years and several oh-so-close moments in the making. And then there was his extra underlying motivation. Woods lost his baby boy two months ago. His wife had a stillbirth delivery at 37 weeks, one month after her father died.
So atop a mountain in the Basque Country, our joy mixed with sorrow, our exhilaration mixed with relief, and we celebrated the heartbreakingly tragic and beautiful moments that are interwoven into the fabric of this team, our sport and life.
Always grateful to have the Grubers on hand to capture the emotion. Never so grateful as today.
