Dwars door Vlaanderen always would have been an exciting race. Now the final tune-up before the all-important Ronde van Vlaanderen, the mid-week classic covers many of the same cobbles and climbs that are staples of the spring. Nasty weather conditions proved a major factor in the way the race would unfold.
To stay warm, the peloton raced so quickly, averaging 47 kilometers per hour during the first three hours of racing, that a breakaway never managed to slip away from the bunch. Instead, Wednesday’s race was one of attrition with the strongest and the smartest surviving at the front. EF Education First – Drapac p/b Cannondale’s Sep Vanmarcke rounded out the podium further feeding our Flanders ambitions.
